Berberine is one of the most-studied botanicals in metabolic health. Here's what randomized controlled trials and research reviews have found.
A 2024 meta-analysis of 50 randomized controlled trials with 4,150 participants found berberine lowered fasting blood glucose, both on its own and alongside standard care.
In the same analysis, berberine on its own was associated with lower total cholesterol, LDL ("bad") cholesterol and triglycerides.
A 2020 review of 10 randomized trials found modest reductions in BMI and waist circumference, about 2.75 cm off the waist on average. Body weight itself didn't change significantly.
Lab and early clinical research suggests berberine interacts with gut bacteria, including short-chain-fatty-acid producers, which may be part of how it supports metabolic health. More human research is needed.
